Featured Artist: Anna

These embroideries by Anna are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. They are extremely detailed and unique and the color palettes are so pretty! She has been kind enough to answer a few questions about her work.

I know that you also create illustrations and work in other mediums, but I am curious to know how you learned embroidery and how long you have been working with it?

I started to learn to sew from a young age and continued through college and university. My sister always gives me good tips as she herself studied embroidery at university. Of course I have a few books in my collection that give lots of good advice and tips too.

When I look at your work I see natural forms and patterns perhaps alluding to mountains with layers of snow, wind blown desert sands, or a river carved canyon. Is there an inspirational source for your embroidery either general or specific?

I am inspired by so much that is around me like architecture, landscapes, patterns, colour. I like building up layers and creating lines and shapes. I never know how a piece of my embroidery is going to look like in the end as I don't always like to plan. Its a bit like putting a puzzle together in way.

I recently heard that the art department at a major university in my area is phasing out its fibers program. Do you feel that handcrafted textile and fiber craft and art is becoming less important in our society?

That is sad to hear about the university. I don't think it is becoming less important in our society as there will always be a need for a bit of print and embellishments in our lives. The amount of talent I have seen over the years in all disciplines of textiles is astounding. I know from personal experience that people have said that they appreciate what has gone into each individual piece and that is encouraging thought.

Inspirations and More

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my first issue of Frankie Magazine! If you haven't heard of Frankie, it's a magazine based in Australia that features beautiful fashion related photography, art, crafts, traveling and tons more. I found out about it recently when I came across the Frankie diary/daily journal and desperately tried to get myself one...unfortunately they had been sold out for some time. Bummer. So, today I've been browsing the internet as usual and I've come across some beautiful things.

I have also been debating about what to do with my hair lately. I've had dark brown hair for quite some time now and I've been trying to grow it out but I can't decide what to do with it...I also have to find a good hair stylist in Seattle. I will miss my old friend and amazing stylist, Michael at Alchemy who is probably one of the best I will ever have! I guess I can always plan to get my hair cut every time I go back to visit Florida. In the mean time, here are some cuts I've been thinking about.

Inspiration

Some things I've come across lately...

1. Artwork by Kristin Vestgard - Campden Gallery
2. Fancy Pillowcases - Rose hip..
3. Miss Fox Wood Brooch - Craftyfolk
4. Handmade Book - Sleepy Fawn
5. Sounds of the Woods - Nadinoo

7. Frankie Diary - Notebook Loves Pen

one. I came across this lovely piece by Kristin Vestgard at the Campden gallery (England) website. I love the soft pastel colors, the sense the foggy atmosphere and the overall feeling of tranquility I feel when viewing her work. You can see more here.

two. These pillowcases have beautiful prints...and with crochet detail on the trim they are perfect! Rose Hips sells them on her etsy.

three. I've been obsessed with Craftyfolk for quite some time now and I'm thinking about purchasing one of these cute little pins.

four. Ashley at Sleepy Fawn makes some of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. This one is accompanied by a video on her blog.

five. The Sounds of the Woods collection by Nadinoo is part of the Autumn/Winter 2011 line and it's one of my favorites. I wish I could afford one of the pieces.

six. I saw this dress in the Threadsence Winter 2011 Lookbook video...polka dots, sheer black, and little shiny details!

seven. If only I would have pre-ordered one of these little gems I could be holding it in my hand right now. Every year when Frankie Magazine designs one of these planners, they sell out immediately.
